Myrtle Springs Alumni Association

A 501c3 Non-Profit Organization

A dynamic team with diverse skills each dedicated to serving the community and restoring our historic school building

WELCOME

The Myrtle Springs Alumni Association is an approved 501(c)(3) non-profit charity located in the small unincorporated town of Myrtle Springs, Texas. We’re located 6 miles west of Canton, Texas and 50 miles east of Dallas, Texas. We were originally formed in 1988 [without the current 501(c)(3) status] to preserve and restore the old wood-framed Myrtle Springs school building that had been closed in 1977 when most of its’ students were transferred to the Wills Point Independent School District.

We received our current IRS tax exempt status on March 11, 2019. Originally built in 1929, the old wood-framed building is approaching the century mark in age. Thanks to unselfish donations from our many supporters and generous grants from local corporations, we installed a new roof in late 2021 that essentially saved the entire structure from ruin. Our next most important task is to repair the building’s foundation and repair the badly damaged (from prior roof leaks) flooring throughout the building.

Mission

We are dedicated to restoring and preserving the former old wood-frame Myrtle Springs School Building (constructed in 1929) and continuing to operate it as a 501(c)(3) community center, together with a 6-acre ball field, playground, and park for citizens of all ages living in the impoverished area of Van Zandt and surrounding counties.

Purpose

We provide the venue for citizens of all ages, from young children to the elderly and disabled, to meet and enjoy exciting activities.

Goal

We achieve our mission by providing the resources for citizens of all ages in the immediate and surrounding communities to gather together to enjoy stage performances, musicals, plays, community reunions, dinners, old-fashioned pot-lucks, in addition to Memorial Day and other holiday celebrations.

For the younger and able, we provide a playground with classic equipment such as a slide, swings, and merry-go-round. Local teams and neighborhood children also enjoy using our ballfield. All our facilities are offered without admission or other charges.
